About The Project

NewHospitals (St Helens & Knowsley) Limited entered into a PFI Project Agreement with St Helens and Knowsley Hospital Services NHS Trust dated 7 June 2006 for the development of the Whiston and St Helens Hospital sites and provision of services.
The scheme is a mix of mainly new and refurbished buildings. Construction commenced early July 2006 on both sites. The advanced works was completed ahead of schedule which included the MSCP which was officially opened on 17 February 2006, temporary energy centre, north and south site sub stations and the PABX.

Whiston Hospital is an acute hospital and has been in a steady state management phase since completion on 19 April 2010. External works completion April 2013. Phase 2 Nightingale House Refurbishment Building Completion 27 June 2011.

The Trust provide a full range of acute services including A&E, Specialist Burns & Plastics Centre and Cancer Services and operating theatres.

St Helens Hospital is a diagnostic and treatment centre and has been in “steady state” management phase since completion on 26 September 2008. External works completion January 2011. St Helens was originally planned for a 24 hour, 20 bed over night stay. However, to keep within budget the top floor was shelled at financial close, this was later reinstated post financial close via a variation order and sub-contracted to the PCT for a GP Surgery, the Darzi Unit. The Diagnostic and Treatment Centre, which is one of the largest in the country, focuses on out patient facilities and clinic appointments.
